In February 2012, the magazine editors at “This Old House” listed Old Northeast “best old-house neighborhood” in Florida, one of the 6th best in the country, and the best neighborhood for gardening.

The magazine featured over 60 neighborhoods on the list. It considered such criteria as architectural diversity, craftsmanship of the homes and preservation momentum, as well as safety, community and walkability.

The list was compiled with the assistance of neighborhood groups, real estate agents, and preservation societies.

The neighborhood boasts “the kind of lush, tropical landscape that put the Sunshine State on the map,” the magazine says. It also cites the area’s waterfront parks, hiking and biking trails and “eclectic mix of traditional house styles.”

In addition, the area’s numerous restaurants, family-friendly events, cultural venues such as the Palladium Theatre, and proximity to the Salvador Dali Museum and Vinoy Renaissance resort add to its appeal.

Other categories cited by the magazine included Best Bargains, Best for Retirees and Best College Towns.

The area features grand houses, many of which were build in the 1920s and sit along red-brick streets with a range of architectural styles.
